Negotiate Your Promotion

A promotion is give-and-take. Before you get it, you have to convince your boss that you deserve it. The company must benefit from what you can offer them so they can provide you with the benefits that you want and need.

An employee must be able to comprehend the giving and receiving process of being granted a promotion. He can master this by taking on the craft of negotiating. The first step is to look at where the employer is coming from.

In doing this, you know what to answer when the employer asks you for the reasons why you are deserving of a higher position and higher pay. Of course, the employer will also study the stance of the company, on whether it is feasible for the business or the department you are working for to give you the promotion and the benefits that you are requesting.

A company never gives promotions or raises just to respond to the need of a particular employee. If that were the case, then you could expect the company to go broke.

As an employee, you must make yourself marketable. You should also know how to promote yourself when you are asked why you deserve that promotion. Mention what you have given the company for the past months or years. Securing a raise in your salary, a bonus in your yearly account or more days off isn’t easy as writing a memo and addressing it to your boss. Companies are receptive when it comes to granting employees their promotions.

Let us review the wrong reasons you might mention on why you deserve a raise and a promotion. You don’t want to request because you have financial responsibilities. You have to separate your personal from your professional. Just because money is tight at home, it doesnt mean that it will be loose at the office. You are your responsibility, not theirs.

You shouldnt ask for a raise or a promotion when you are having a hard time dealing with your authoritative figures and your co-workers. This will only have a negative reflection on your capabilities. Companies only care about how you deliver the tasks assigned to you but sometimes office politics can be complicated once word gets round of your liabilities when it comes to performing.

You also have to remember that once you have been granted the promotion you’ve requested, you will have more responsibilities. If you succeeded in getting that promotion, then you should prove to your boss, the company and your co-workers that you are deserving.
